Mothers, We See You | Tips for Formal Dress Shopping

There’s a moment every mother knows is coming…but nothing quite prepares you for it.
The formal. It starts as something small.
A date in the calendar. A conversation at the dinner table. A little excitement in your daughter’s voice.
And then suddenly—it’s everything.
The Magic… and the Madness
In our home, we’ve lived it. Not once—but six times over the past three years.
Six formals. Six socials. Three daughters. And if I’m being honest… close to $6,000.
Not just on dresses—but on the full experience: hair, makeup, accessories, shoes… and everything in between.
What begins as something special, something you want to savour—quickly becomes overwhelming.
The Search for “The Dress”
It sounds simple, doesn’t it?
Find a dress. But any mother who has been through it knows—it’s never just that.
It’s walking into stores packed with hundreds of styles. Racks overflowing with dresses that all start to look the same.
Change rooms filled to the brim. Sales assistants stretched thin, picking up what’s been left behind. And sometimes… not even making it through the front door.
Because it’s just too much. Too many options. Too much pressure. Too little clarity.
And all you want is to see your daughter light up when she finds the one.
It’s Not Just a Dress. Because this moment, it’s not really about the dress.
It’s about watching your little girl—stand in front of you, grown, confident, radiant…and realising time has quietly moved forward.
It’s pride. It’s joy. It’s a little bit of letting go. And in the middle of all of that… you’re trying to manage logistics, budgets, expectations—and emotions.
Why We Created Our Closet
Our Closet is more than a business to us. It’s our baby.
It was built from these exact moments— the chaos, the cost, the overwhelm… and the desire to make it all feel a little easier. Because we’ve been you. We’ve stood in those stores. We’ve felt that pressure.
We’ve watched the excitement turn into exhaustion. And we knew there had to be a better way.
A Different Experience
At Our Closet, we’ve created something intentional.
A curated collection— not hundreds of dresses, but the right dresses. Pieces that are timeless and elegant. Carefully selected.
Designed to make the decision easier, not harder. Because finding the dress shouldn’t feel like a battle. It should feel like a moment you remember.
For the Next One… and the Last One (For Now)
We have one more formal in our home later this year. The final one—for a few years.
And we already know… it will be just as emotional, just as special.
But this time, it will feel different. Because Our Closet exists.
We See You. We Feel You. To every mother navigating this season—We see you.
The effort.
The energy.
The love behind every decision.
And if we can make even a small part of this journey easier, more beautiful, and more memorable…
Then Our Closet has done exactly what it was created to do.
What We’ve Learned (So You Don’t Have To)
After six formals and socials, we’ve learned a few things—some the easy way… and some the expensive way.
If you’re just starting this journey, here’s what we’d gently share:
1. Set a Budget (and try to stay close to it)
If your daughter is in Year 10, this is likely just the beginning. There’s often a Year 11 social and then the final Year 12 formal.
Have the conversation early. This isn’t the moment to go all out at 15 or 16. Save that for the final one—when it really feels like the end of an era.
2. Keep It Simple in the Early Years
In Year 10, simplify where you can:
- Consider doing makeup at home.
- Keep hairstyles soft and effortless.
- You don’t need to do everything all at once.
- There’s something beautiful about building up to that final moment.
3. Rent the Dress
If there’s one thing we’ve learned about this generation—it’s this:
They don’t wear anything twice. Between TikTok and Instagram, once it’s been seen, it’s done. And that’s okay. But it also means spending hundreds (or thousands) on a dress worn once… doesn’t always make sense. Renting gives you access to something special—without the long-term cost.
4. Time Your Try-On Right
If you are renting, this is important.
Book your try-on appointment close to the event date.
Teenage bodies change. Quickly.
What fits perfectly a few months out… may not feel the same on the night.
This one small decision can save a lot of last-minute stress.
5. Remember What This Is Really About
It’s easy to get caught up in the details.
The dress. The shoes. The hair. The photos.
But when the night comes… none of that is what you’ll remember most.
It’s the way she looked at herself in the mirror.
The way she smiled.
The moment she walked out the door.
Hold onto that.
And if Our Closet can help make this process feel just a little lighter— a little more considered, a little less overwhelming— then we’re exactly where we’re meant to be.
